Stonehouse is very lucky to have a dedicated band of volunteers who work very hard to keep the town looking clean, tidy and full of colour all year round. They weed and plant and water the floral displays around Stonehouse and in particular make the town look magnificent during the summer months. They are funded mainly by donations, fundraising and running the Bloomers café.

Stonehouse in Bloom is top of the podium!

The fantastic floral displays that have blossomed in Stonehouse throughout the summer have resulted in success at this year’s Heart of England in Bloom awards. They won the Small Town category, were re-awarded a gold medal and are now in the national finals for Britain in Bloom.

Hanging baskets, planters, troughs and window boxes have been overflowing with colourful bedding plants all around the town which has gained much admiration from residents, businesses and visitors. Stonehouse’s ‘In Bloom’ committee, a dedicated  band of volunteers, has ensured that nearly every corner of Stonehouse looked its best throughout the summer months and, in particular, for judging day on 12th July.

Councillor Debbie Curtis who is also a member of the In Bloom committee, said: “Everyone pulled out all the stops this year and the town has been looking wonderful. We are so pleased and happy that all of the hard work has paid off and we are very excited about being finalists in the national competition.”

Councillor Neil Gibbs, Mayor of Stonehouse, said: “I would like to send my congratulations to the In Bloom volunteers but also thanks to local residents and businesses who have also played their part in keeping the town looking so lovely.”

Back in 2015, a group of volunteers set out to match earlier achievements in the Royal Horticultural Society’s “Heart of England in Bloom”    competition.

With the support of the Town Council, the team set about filling the town with flowers. Generous financial support from town centre businesses meant that colourful hanging baskets and lamppost planters could be seen along much of the main street.  Other floral displays were planted at the railway station, in the Rest Garden, around the War Memorial and on the town greens.

That year, they won a silver award.  Since then, they have won the Silver Gilt Award, 3 Gold medals and, in 2019 year, small town of the year which has resulted in being shortlisted for the National Britain in Bloom awards for 2020!

Councillor Neil Gibbs, Mayor of Stonehouse, said: “I would like to send my congratulations to the In Bloom volunteers but also thanks to local residents and businesses who have also played their part in keeping the town looking so lovely.”
