Petition to GCC to hand The Ship Inn site back to Stonehouse

PLEASE NOTE: The petition is now on hold due to the County already having handed the site to the District Council. The matter is due for further discussion at the next Full Town Council Meeting of 11th November 2013 at 7pm.

The Town Council are rightly angered by the refusal of Stroud District Council to allow nomination of the Ship Inn Site as a Community Asset.  The District Council insist that the wording within the Localism Act “in the recent past” means that previous use of the site should have been within 3 to 5 years.

Further Information 

The Department of Communities and Local Government have advised that there is no fixed time for “recent past” as it would be too overly prescriptive and not allow a local authority to make a fair judgement.  The Town Council believe it is the intention of Stroud District Council to sell the site for development once it is passed to them from the County Council.

That is why they are launching a campaign to prevent the handover.  Please refer to the Town Council website and add your name to the petition.  Why does the Town Council want the site protected for the Community?  Because it would ideally become a Town Wharf allowing canal boats to moor and visit the town, adding a much needed attraction.

Spa Inn, filmed by BBC for series The Planners

The Town Council meeting of the 2nd September was filmed by the BBC for their series “The Planners”. The topic which featured was the Spa Inn.   Wadworths & Co. have made an attempt at marketing the Inn by offering it to the Town Council, or their nominee, for a rent free standard tenancy agreement for 12 months.

The Town Council dispute that this is rent free as the brewery are demanding a £5000 deposit and working capital in the region of £23000.  The Town Council did not dismiss this approach but would seek to find a better deal if there are any prospective tenants with the right experience willing to take on the challenge.  Please contact the Town Clerk if you are interested.
